USA Boxing Exec Dir Jim Millman, Six Others Leave Organization

Poor Sponsorship Sales Have Forced Millman
Out As USA Boxing CEO & Exec Dir
Poor sponsorships sales "have forced Jim Millman out" as USA Boxing CEO & Exec Dir, and the NGB has "gutted its marketing and media and public relations departments in its latest shake-up," according to Brian Gomez of the Colorado Springs GAZETTE. Millman, who was the NGB's seventh Exec Dir in the past eight years, left Tuesday under a "mutual agreement" and was replaced on an interim basis by Univ. of Nevada boxing coach Mike Martino. Millman said that six other USA Boxing employees were laid off: Marketing Manager Jessica Cross, Marketing Coordinator Pam Crowley, Media & PR Dir Julie Goldsticker, Broadcast & Digital Media Manager Michelle Nadeau, Digital & Publications Manager Suzanne Grassel and Data Entry Clerk Karen Chapman. Seven staff members remain at the USA Boxing HQs at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Gomez notes USA Boxing ended '07 with $1.3M in total assets, but is "now probably nowhere near that mark because of an economic downturn that has made companies less willing to spend money on Olympic sponsorships." The NGB "boasts Everlast and XP Apparel as its only corporate partners since United Airlines has yet to renew." Millman: "For an organization to grow and market itself, we needed fresh revenue." Millman said that the "biggest problem was 'finding new companies.'" Millman: "We spoke to a lot of companies, and the primary feedback we received is that those companies are looking to protect the programs they have in place and are not looking to add new things" (GAZETTE.com, 6/24).
