Cuban Suggests ESPN Make A
List Of Blacklisted Blogs, Sites
Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban on his blog wrote ESPN, local newspapers, radio and TV media have all "become the patsies of bloggers." Cuban: "How do you make an ESPN reporter jump? Make up something and put it on your blog." Cuban wrote to stop this, ESPN should put up a "page of blacklisted blogs and websites [whose] posts they won't comment on or report on in any way." Cuban: "It will create a short term surge of traffic for those sites, but then they will go away as the proprietors of the sites realize that being discredited is not a good thing" (BLOGMAVERICK.com, 6/19).

IN THE NETWORK: Rutgers Univ. has reached a three-year deal with Verizon's FiOS TV under which three women's basketball games "will be shown live annually" on Verizon's new network, FiOS1. The net also will "show four other Rutgers games each year -- men's and women's soccer games and men's and women's lacrosse games." Rutgers said that the net "would pick up production costs associated with the 21 events over the length of the contract" (Bergen RECORD, 6/23).

NEW TOP DOG: In Atlanta, Tim Tucker reported the Univ. of Georgia (UGA) officially announced that football radio analyst Scott Howard will become play-by-play announcer, replacing Larry Munson. The move means UGA "for the first time in 44 years" will enter a football season with someone other than Munson as their first-string play-by-play radio announcer. Tucker wrote Howard's "work for 15 seasons as Munson's color analyst and his fill-in play-by-play work the past two seasons made him about as clear-cut a choice as there could be for this job" (AJC.com, 6/22).

NOTES: In Boston, Nick Cafardo wrote "given all of the color men and personalities he's had to work with this season, there can be no doubt" NESN Red Sox play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo is "one of the best." Orsillo's regular broadcast partner, Jerry Remy, has missed most of the season while recovering from cancer surgery (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/21)....Motor Racing Network's (MRN) Woody Cain has been named host of the net's "NASCAR Today" daily update show, replacing Joe Moore, who served as the program's host since '01 (MRN).
