Bills On Track To Sell About 55,000 Season Tickets This Season

Bills Have Already Sold 53,048 Season Tickets,
Could Rank As Third-Highest In Team's History |
The Bills are "on track to sell about 55,000 season tickets this year," which would rank as the "third-highest in the team's 50-year history," according to a front-page piece by Gene Warner of the BUFFALO NEWS. The Bills "already have sold 53,048 season tickets, with almost two months left until the first home preseason game." Bills officials "believe they have a shot at matching last season's total of 56,011, second only to the 57,132 sold in 1992." The Bills have "already sold out the first four of their seven regular-season games" at Ralph Wilson Stadium, and "fewer than 3,000 tickets remain" for the November 29 Dolphins-Bills game. The "only games with substantial tickets available are for normally popular opponents" the Patriots and Colts. Bills COO Russ Brandon said that because of the Bills' "relatively low prices for tickets and premium seats, the team has to be 'hitting on every cylinder' in its sales efforts to get the revenue it needs." Bills officials said that the "successful ticket sales reflect several factors," including the "continuing passion that Bills fans have for their team." Another factor is the "key inroads the team has made in regionalizing the franchise, especially into the Rochester area and Southern Ontario, which together make up more than 20[%] of the team's season-ticket base." Other factors include "renewed interest in the on-field product," and "keeping ticket prices affordable by not raising them in the off-season." Warner notes on the "down side, the Bills still have quite a few unsold suites and club seats." Just "under 1,000 of the team's 8,676 club seats remain unsold, along with 12 to 15 of its 164 luxury boxes." But the team is "buoyed by season-ticket sales to its Southern Ontario audience, considered one of the reasons for beginning the Bills-in-Toronto partnership last season." That number "climbed to 6,834 last season" and is "expected to increase again this year" (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/23).
NORTHERN EXPOSURE: In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich notes the image of Bills QB Trent Edwards has joined the "five-storey high photos celebrating the biggest stars" of the Blue Jays outside Rogers Centre, and CFL Toronto Argonauts fans "might wonder why a guy who will work at Rogers Centre once this year is getting more exposure than any of the Argos." When former Blue Jays C Gregg Zaun left the team to sign with the Orioles, Rogers "decided to replace his face with something to promote its Bills series and chose Edwards." But the Argonauts will play at the stadium 10 times in the upcoming CFL season, and QB Kerry Joseph said there "should be an Argo" depicted at the stadium. Joseph: "That is our home, too, but at the same time I'm not Mr. Rogers -- so if that's the way they want to do it, that's the way they want to do it." But Zelkovich wrote of an Argonauts player being featured, "Don't count on that happening ... unless Rogers buys the Argos (and don't count on that happening, either)." Both the Blue Jays and the Bills Toronto Series are owned by Rogers Communications, and Rogers VP/Communications Jan Innes said that the company "prefers to promote its own products." Innes: "The banners are for properties Rogers owns" (TORONTO STAR, 6/20).
