Molsons Eye More Money From Canadiens Partners To Fund Bid

Molsons Plan To Finance Canadiens
Bid With Existing Business Partners
Prospective Canadiens Owners the Molson family "plan to finance their bid by wringing more money out of commercial relationships with existing business partners of the team" and Bell Centre, according to Willis & Gordon of the GLOBE & MAIL. The targeted business partners include telecommunications firm BCE, French-language TV net RDS and Molson Coors Brewing Co. An exec who is part of the Molson consortium looking to acquire 80.1% of the team and other related assets from Owner George Gillett said, "You'll end up a private family controlling the team and the arena, but building stronger ties to the country's biggest phone company, the biggest sports television network, and the biggest brewer." Willis & Gordon note the stronger ties to the Canadiens and Bell Centre "could include short-term loans to the Molson family, or non-voting equity stakes." Sources indicated that Woodbridge Co., the largest shareholder of CTVglobemedia, is "willing to financially back RDS, a division of CTVglobemedia." The sources said that the NHL has "already signed off on this arrangement, which is complicated by the fact" that CTVglobemedia owns a minority stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. BCE also has a minority stake of CTVglobemedia. The Canadiens-RDS rights deal expires in '12, but is "now likely to be extended." In exchange for taking a minority stake in the Molson bid, BCE is "expected to win new, exclusive rights to use the Canadiens and Bell Centre entertainment on its wireless network." Also, Molson Coors is "expected to ramp up its sponsorship of shows" at Bell Centre, as well as "its presence in the NHL team" (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/23). Meanwhile, Bell Canada yesterday confirmed that it too will have a minority stake in the Molson family's bid to acquire the Canadiens. The company in a release said having interest in the franchise will give Bell "enhanced marketing opportunities" and "preferred access to Canadiens content." Financial terms of Bell's share were not disclosed (MONTREALGAZETTE.com, 6/22).

PARTING IS SUCH SWEET SORROW: Gillett yesterday said the day he agreed to sell the Canadiens was "just about the toughest day of my life." The GLOBE & MAIL's Stephen Brunt writes during his eight-year ownership, Gillett "won the locals over, charmed them, made them understand the team was in good hands." By "treating ownership of the franchise like a trust, by stepping back and declining to impose himself on its day-to-day operation, he seemed the opposite of the meddling owner." Gillett's time in Montreal "will linger as a fond memory" (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/23). In Montreal, Pat Hickey writes Gillett and the Molson brothers both were the "biggest winners" in the deal. Geoff, Andrew and Justin Molson have "reacquired a family heirloom," buying the team, arena and Gillett Entertainment Group, all which "produce a steady return." BCE also "is a winner" in the deal, as it "gets to keep the Bell name on the arena but, more importantly, it doesn't have to worry about the team falling into the hands of rival Quebecor," believed to be the runner-up in the bidding. In addition, Canadiens fans are "winners because the games will continue to be on RDS." It is "not free TV but a Quebecor bid raised fears that at least some of the games might wind up" on PPV. As a result, Quebecor is the "biggest loser" in the deal (Montreal GAZETTE, 6/23).
