Dolphins Reportedly Using Emilio (l),
Gloria Estefan As Hispanic Ambassadors |
Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross Thursday will introduce entertainers Gloria and Emilio Estefan as minority owners, according to a source cited by Garcia & Neal in a front-page piece for the MIAMI HERALD. The source said that the NFL and the Dolphins are "looking to expand their reach to South Florida's growing Hispanic community and are turning to the Estefans as their ambassadors." A Dolphins press release said that there will be a "major announcement on behalf of the Dolphins" Thursday hosted by the Estefans and Ross at Land Shark Stadium. This is "similar to the way the Dolphins announced their association with singer Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville business." Garcia & Neal write Ross "likes show-business personalities and likes to make announcements with a show-business flair and timing." Ross began speaking with the Estefans "three months ago about getting a small piece of the Dolphins." The Estefans "wouldn't be the NFL's first Hispanic owners," as Choice Energy CEO E. Javier Loya is a Texans investor. Gloria Estefan yesterday was in Nashville recording this year's "MNF" introduction song for ESPN with Hank Williams Jr. (MIAMI HERALD, 6/23).
ADDING TO GAME-DAY EXPERIENCE: In Ft. Lauderdale, Sarah Talalay notes Ross "has been seeking minority partners for months," and he has also been "working to infuse entertainment into the stadium experience for fans." A source said that Emilio Estefan has "already been working on original songs to add to the game-day experience" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 6/23). Talalay noted while it is "not expected to be announced on Thursday, perhaps an off-shoot of Estefan Enterprises' successful Bongos Cuban Cafe restaurant chain could be installed at the stadium." There are "several Bongos locations, including one adjacent to AmericanAirlines Arena, as well as in Miami Beach, Orlando, and Mexico City" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 6/22). In Miami, Greg Cote wrote, "If this is a systematic march through every So-Fla celeb in the music business, I can only presume the Dolphins will somehow find a way to skip over Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew" (MIAMIHERALD.com, 6/22). PROFOOTBALLTALK.com's Gregg Rosenthal wrote, "Maybe Ricky Martin will be the next minority owner of the Dolphins" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 6/22).
