MLB Rangers Could Attract Buyers As Ticket, Merch Sales Increase

Fans Have Been Spending More Money
At Rangers Ballpark In Arlington
More fans have been "flocking to see a winning Rangers team this season, and they've been spending more money at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington," which "could make the team more attractive to potential buyers" interested in acquiring a majority stake from Owner Tom Hicks, according to Andrea Ahles in a special to the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. The Rangers through 35 home games this season have drawn 946,572 fans to Rangers Ballpark, 27,045 fans per game, up 11% over the same period last year. The team averaged 1.9 million fans last year, down from 2.5 million fans for the '04 season, and Rangers Exec VP/Sales Andrew Silverman said the team is "very encouraged" by the figures for this season. Silverman: "People are responding to the team and responding to the values we have." Silverman said that single-game purchases are up 69% this year and that online ticket sales "have been strong," as the Rangers for three of the last five weeks "have sold more single-game tickets online than any other team" in MLB. Ahles noted food, beverage and merchandise sales are "up as well," and combined with "recent staff cuts to trim operating costs, the Rangers have positioned themselves nicely to be sold." Rangers Exec VP/Communications John Blake said that food and beverage sales are up 22% and merchandise sales have climbed 49% over the same period last season. Blake: "From a game revenue standpoint and ticket standpoint, things are going pretty well." Blake noted that the "introduction of a red jersey has boosted merchandise sales" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/21).
