Economy, BCS, Diversity Among Issues At Annual NACDA Convention

Moglia Says To Brace For Two
More Years Of Economic Trouble
TD Ameritrade Chair Joe Moglia this weekend at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics' (NACDA) convention in Orlando "told leaders from a wide variety of colleges and universities they need to brace for two more years of economic trouble, but the nation will eventually recover," according to Iliana Limon of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. Moglia: "We are in much better shape than we were a year ago. We're going to get through this. You've got to fight through 2009 and 2010, and then we'll be OK by the time we get to 2011." Meanwhile, Stanford Univ. AD Bob Bowlsby, "one of many speakers who discussed the grim economic climate in college athletics and creative ways to weather the economic downturn," noted his school laid off "about 35 people" in the athletic department. Bowlsby added that when he came to Stanford in '06, the school's $520M endowment "seemed poised to eventually reach $1[B], but its value has dropped 20[%] during the past three years." Bowlsby: "Quite frankly, when I came to Stanford, I never thought I'd ever have any money problems again. Now, three years later, that $520[M] is $410[M]" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/20).

MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB: In Orlando, Josh Robbins reported convention attendees "weren't the least bit surprised that the Mountain West Conference's proposal to reshape the [BCS] didn't gain support" at last week's Collegiate Commissioners Association meeting. ACC Commissioner and BCS Coordinator John Swofford said there was "no overall support for the proposal." Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany added, "I did not see any merit to the Mountain West proposal. And, more importantly, it's not what I thought; our presidents didn't see much merit, and our athletic directors didn't see much merit." But Colorado State AD Paul Kowalczyk said, "Really, the issue is, why would they change it? Why would they allow five other conferences -- or at least one other conference -- into the mix when they have the controlling rights and they bring home most of the bread?" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/21).

Evans Feels Schools Need To
Take Chances On Minority Coaches
WORKING TOWARD A SOLUTION: The ORLANDO SENTINEL notes the NCAA is "trying to find a solution" to the "scarcity of minority head coaches in Division I football." At the convention, 11 minority football coaches were paired up with "various ADs to build relationships and provide insight." Univ. of Georgia AD Damon Evans: "The people who are interviewing these individuals have got to take a chance. Just to do the interviewing -- to say you've done that -- isn't enough. Right now in anything you do in life, you've got to take a risk or chance to see how that turns out." There currently are only nine minority head coaches at 119 Division I schools -- seven African-Americans, one Latino and one Pacific Islander (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/20).

CONVENTION NOTES: Former Rollins Univ. AD Phil Roach was inducted into the NACDA HOF and awarded the Division II ADA Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday. Also, Stanford, "in what is becoming an annual tradition," was awarded its 15th straight NACDA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/20).
