San Jose A's Ballpark Vote Will Not Take Place In November

San Jose Officials Have Decided To Not Yet
Seek Voter Approval For New A's Stadium |
San Jose officials have "decided not to seek voter approval of a new A's baseball stadium in November" after A's Owner Lew Wolff said that he would "rather wait for baseball officials to indicate whether the A's would be allowed to move" to the city, according to Denis Theriault of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Voter approval "would be required for San Jose to cut a deal on downtown land eyed for a $500[M] A's stadium," and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed "first raised the prospect of a November vote last month." But Reed said that he "would ask voters to weigh in no sooner than March 2010 -- which is also when neighboring Santa Clara could be voting" on the proposed stadium for the 49ers. Wolff: "A ballot issue in November is premature. We're not prepared." Theriault notes Wolff "needs baseball's permission to move to Santa Clara County," currently a part of the Giants' territory. Meanwhile, San Jose Redevelopment Agency Assistant Dir John Weis said that the agency "remains in negotiations for two remaining parcels" at the proposed ballpark site, and once the city "acquires that land, officials will be able to come up with a market value for the stadium site that would be part of any ballot measure" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 6/22).
