IndyCar Series Looking At Evening Up Road Tracks, Ovals In '10

Race At Twin Ring Motegi
Track In Japan Is Safe |
The IRL has picked out 18 venues for its '10 schedule, and "for the first time in IndyCar Series history, there will be as many road and street circuits as oval tracks," according to Curt Cavin of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. IRL Commercial Division President Terry Angstadt indicated that the series will "visit two new road/street circuits ... and drop one of its current ovals." Cavin reports a road track in Brazil will "open the season," with the second addition possibly being Barber Motorsports Park outside Birmingham, Alabama. Angstadt did not identify which oval race will be cut, but "questions about the promoter of the race at the Milwaukee Mile signal concerns for the historic race." The race at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan "is safe," as the IRL is thought to have "signed a multi-year contract when it moved this year's race to the fall." Angstadt said that two events "that won't make the cut are Cleveland and Houston." He noted that Cleveland "'certainly had a wide open opportunity,' but community support just isn't there" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/22). In Des Moines, Rob Gray reported the IndyCar Series is returning to Iowa Speedway, but a "two-year extension agreement has yet to be finalized." Angstadt said that there has been "discussion of a date change for the Iowa Corn Indy 250 weekend, but if that occurs, it would stop short of a drastic alteration." Iowa Speedway CEO Stan Clement said that the deal "should be cemented in about 30 days" (DES MOINES REGISTER, 6/21).
