Slater Working On IMAX Surf
Film With Sponsor Quiksilver
In Florida, Hillard Grossman reports surfer Kelly Slater and sponsor Quiksilver are "working on an IMAX surf film, due out next February, and technical products." Slater, who has been repped by the company since '90 and recently signed a five-year extension, said, "Quiksilver's been family to me for so long, it's hard to remember a time before them." Slater's mom, Judy, said Slater has "another offer," but added, "I knew he'd go with Quiksilver. He's been with them half his life." Grossman notes the signing "doesn't actually cement Slater's future on the World Championship Tour, but he likely would at least compete in two major events hosted by Quiksilver, in Australia and France" (FLORIDA TODAY, 6/19).

GOOD HAIR DAY: In Detroit, Nicholas Cotsonika reported Lions rookie QB Matthew Stafford Wednesday made several appearances to promote a new endorsement deal with Axe Hair. Stafford promoted Axehair.com, which includes a link to the company's Facebook page, "where fans can enter to win a trip" to hang out with Stafford at the ESPYs next month in L.A. The Axe Web site also includes "glamour shots of Stafford" (FREEP.com, 6/18).

WHO WEARS SHORT SHORTS? REUTERS reported Real Madrid MF Cristiano Ronaldo's "penchant for super-tight shorts has created a new market for retailers." British department store group Debenhams Thursday said that sales of "skimpy shorts leapt" over 117% in the last week after Ronaldo was "photographed sporting his skin-tight style" in the U.S. Debenhams Dir of Menswear Buying Paul Baldwin: "We believe that demand for super tight shorts is about to become a worldwide phenomenon -- and the value of the market will dwarf the fee paid for the player by Real Madrid" (REUTERS, 6/18).
