Chargers Extend Clear Channel Radio Deal Through '11 Season

Chargers Reach Two-Year Contract
Extension With Clear Channel
The Chargers have reached a two-year contract extension with Clear Channel Communications to broadcast all of the team's preseason, regular season and postseason games through the '11 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though the Chargers will take on a greater amount of sellable inventory as part of the deal. The team's current deal with Clear Channel was set to expire after the '09 season. KIOZ-FM will continue to serve as the radio home of the Chargers and will produce extended pregame and postgame shows, while KLSD-AM also will broadcast games and postgame shows (Chargers). In San Diego, Jay Posner cites sources as saying that the Chargers "will receive a much smaller rights fee in return for more commercial time to sell." It is "believed the Chargers have been receiving an annual rights fee in the low seven figures," between $1-3M. However, that amount under the terms of the extension is "expected to be reduced to the low six figures, with the Chargers hoping to make up the difference by controlling more of the commercials" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/19).
