Daley Agrees To Meet With City Council Over '16 Host Contract

Daley's Agreement To Sign Host City
Contract Has Angered Many In Chicago
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley "may have smoothed the waters" with the IOC this week by agreeing to sign the host city contract for the '16 Games without modifications, but his decision has "touched off a storm at home," according to Dardick, Hersh & Bergen of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Daley Press Secretary Jacquelyn Heard Thursday said that Daley "would indeed meet" with the Chicago City Council, just one day after he "asserted that there was no reason to consult with aldermen on this commitment." Heard: "The mayor understands the City Council is a critical partner in this endeavor. They've raised concerns. They have questions. So we will put the matter before the council again." Daley in signing the document Wednesday placed the "full financial responsibility" of the Games on local taxpayers, and Chicago Aldermen and civic leaders are "railing against a perceived lack of information on how Daley could make that pledge and still say the city's liability will not exceed" the previously agreed upon $500M. Alderman Brian Doherty said, "I don't know where he gets the authority to do that. ... They've been very arrogant in doing whatever they want and not consulting us." A negative vote from the City Council "would have the potential to derail" Chicago's bid, but Daley "rarely fails to sway a majority of aldermen on key issues." The Chicago 2016 bid team Thursday "declined to provide any significant details about the additional private insurance," or another $500M in "private insurance already in the city's guarantee package." Both would be financed through the local organizing committee (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/19).

CLEANING UP THE MESS: The British Olympic Association (BOA) Wednesday said that it spent $1.64M (all figures U.S.) on "consultants and pay-offs for former executives during 2008, when it also faced a cash-flow crisis that required" a $3.28M advance from LOCOG. The BOA "underwent a major restructuring last year," and BOA Chair Colin Moynihan said the consultancy fees and pay-offs for former employees were the "most important investment the BOA has ever made." Moynihan contends that the move was "necessary to give the organisation breathing space to renegotiate its overdraft." The BOA in '08 made a pre-tax loss of $2.45M (Owen Gibson, Manchester GUARDIAN, 6/18).

GERMAN SHEPHERD: AROUND THE RINGS' Mark Bisson reports BMW has signed on as the "first major partner" of Munich's bid for the '18 Winter Olympics, in a "deal worth up to" $7M. Munich 2018 officials added that they are "close to signing three more big-name sponsors, which could generate" an additional $21M (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 6/19).
