Chiefs Relocating Training Camp To Missouri Western State Univ.

Chiefs' Training Camp Has Been Held
In Wisconsin For Nearly 20 Years |
The Chiefs' training camp is "coming back to Missouri," according to Jason Noble of the K.C. STAR. The Missouri Development Finance Board (MDFB) Thursday "approved a revised agreement to issue $25[M] in tax credits to the football club in exchange for improvements at the Truman Sports Complex and construction of a training facility" at Missouri Western State Univ. A "key issue in approving the deal was the Chiefs' pledge to relocate their summer training camp to the university from Wisconsin, where it has been held for nearly 20 years." Bringing the team's annual three-week camp back to Missouri "could happen as early as 2010." The deal was "originally signed in December," but new Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon this spring "began questioning the terms of the agreement and whether they matched the Chiefs' promises to the board." The Chiefs are "committed to Missouri Western for just five years," but the team "must now hold camp in Missouri for at least 10 years -- either at Missouri Western, another state university or the Truman Sports Complex." If the team "reneges on the pact, it must pay back a portion of the tax credits it receives." To secure the tax credits, the Chiefs "will make about $50.6[M] in improvements to Arrowhead Stadium and contribute $10[M] toward construction of the facility at Missouri Western." The $13.4M training facility at Missouri Western "will include a 120-yard indoor field, meeting and office space, and two outdoor fields." It "will be owned by the university and open to students and faculty." Officials said that construction "should begin in July" (K.C. STAR, 6/19).
