Chargers Again Considering New Stadium Site In Oceanside

Chargers' Consideration Of New Stadium In
Oceanside Another Attempt Not To Leave Town
The Chargers are once again "contemplating a new stadium" in Oceanside, California, "this time at the site of a defunct drive-in theater on State Route 76," according to Matthew Hall of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. A team spokesperson and Georgia-based developer Thomas Enterprises said that it is "very early in their discussions and an Oceanside councilman called the prospect highly unlikely," but the talks "mark yet another attempt to keep the Chargers from bolting town." Thomas Enterprises execs "broached the idea of putting a stadium" in Oceanside with Chargers Special Counsel Mark Fabiani "six weeks ago." Hall notes the site "would be closer to untapped football fan markets" in L.A. and Orange County, but Fabiani "acknowledged the Oceanside property has issues as well" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/19). In California, Craig Tenbroeck notes Thomas Enterprises "received city approval last year to build a 92-acre shopping center" in Oceanside, but "litigation and a curdled economy have complicated the project." Fabiani said that talks have "focused on a mixed-use project that would be anchored by a stadium." However, Tenbroeck notes a "big question mark hangs over the Oceanside drive-In site," as the "close proximity of the municipal airport could dramatically complicate development." Fabiani: "It's something we're seeking some expert advice on." Oceanside City Council member Esther Sanchez "speculated that a stadium would only be feasible with major transportation improvements." Sanchez: "It's highly, highly unlikely in my mind that they're serious." Fabiani said that Oceanside is "attractive because it's near Orange County," plus "many of the team's season-ticket holders live in North County." Fabiani added that moving to Chula Vista "remains a possibility, and 'we have had reinvigorated discussions with the city of San Diego'" (NORTH COUNTY TIMES, 6/19).
