Cotton Bowl Stadium Working With Dallas
Officials To Get New Bowl Game |
Cotton Bowl Stadium Manager Ronald Rainey said that former Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl Exec Dir Tom Starr is "working with Dallas officials to bring a new bowl" game to the stadium, "perhaps as early as the 2010-11 bowl season." Rainey added that the game "could be an existing bowl or a newly created game." Rainey said that Starr also is "working on attracting another marquee regular-season college game to the renovated stadium, which can seat as many as 92,000 for football." Starr, who in '03 helped launch the Armed Forces Bowl, left the bowl last month to "start his own consulting company." Starr "characterized his talks as 'preliminary' and 'far from concrete' and said it would take at least a couple of years to get a new bowl because of conferences' contractual ties to other bowls" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/18).
PREMIUM PERK: In Akron, Katie Byard reports Univ. of Akron (UA) trustees yesterday "voted the school's new football stadium dry -- except for premium seats." Alcohol sales will be "permitted only in the club and suite areas." The policy at the new InfoCision Stadium "covers home football games for the 2009 season," and UA trustees said that they will "reconsider the alcohol policy for subsequent seasons." Byard notes the prohibition "does not apply to nonathletic and nonuniversity events held at the stadium" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 6/18).
IN THE CARDS: In Louisville, Kelly House notes officials for the new Louisville downtown arena yesterday said that the facility is "well on its way to meeting its November 2010 opening." M.A. Mortensen Co. Project Manager Bill Hedge, whose company is leading the construction, said that contractors are "spending about $500,000 a day to complete the project on time." Hedge: "We're not going to stop construction. We are going to play basketball here in 2010, and we're gonna do it in budget" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 6/17).
GOIN' DOWN TO GEORGIA: In Atlanta, Micahel Carvell reports the SEC yesterday announced that its '14 men's basketball tournament "will be played at the Georgia Dome." Gwinnett Arena was awarded the conference's women's basketball tournament in '10, '13 and '14, while Sommet Center in Nashville was awarded the '11 and '12 women's basketball tournaments and the '13 men's basketball tournament. Carvell notes Georgia Dome also will host the NCAA men's Final Four in '13 (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 6/18).
