Mlakar's Contract With Senators
Will Not Be Renewed Next Season |
The Senators will not renew the contract of President & CEO ROY MLAKAR for next season, and Senators COO CYRIL LEEDER will replace Mlakar as Senators Sports & Entertainment President, effective July 1, according to Ken Warren of the OTTAWA CITIZEN. As part of the restructuring, Senators CFO ERIN CROWE and GM BRYAN MURRAY each will add the title of Exec VP. Warren writes the moves are "not surprising," as Leeder's "prominence within the organization has grown steadily during the past two years." And while Mlakar was "seemingly everywhere ... when he was appointed to the position" in '96, his responsibilities "have dwindled considerably." The Senators last year extended Mlakar's contract "by just one additional year" after his five-year deal expired (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 6/16). The GLOBE & MAIL's Sean Gordon writes Mlakar's dismissal is "widely seen as a cost-cutting measure." Mlakar is a "staple of the city's philanthropic scene," but "persistent rumours that Mlakar's days in Ottawa were numbered have circulated since last season." It is expected that Leeder will "confine his role to the business and operations side of the team" (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/16). In Ottawa, Bruce Garrioch reports Mlakar's firing "sent shockwaves through the hockey community," as "not only did Mlakar have a strong presence in his role with the Senators, he also spent countless hours helping out charities" (OTTAWA SUN, 6/16).
