Andy Murray To Debut New Fred Perry Outfit At Wimbledon

Murray's Outfit Honors
Perry's 100th Birthday
Tennis player Andy Murray yesterday unveiled a "monogrammed cable-knit jumper of the kind worn" by late Int'l Tennis HOFer Fred Perry, part of a "top-to-toe outfit designed by the Fred Perry sportswear company" Murray will debut at Wimbledon to mark the centenary of Perry's birth, according to Patrick Kidd of the LONDON TIMES. The ensemble also features "shorts -- shorter than shorts have been for many a year -- collared shirts and a bag, all bearing the Fred Perry laurel wreath that has been the company's logo since 1952, and Murray's initials." Murray and his brother, fellow tennis player Jamie Murray, will "wear the kit exclusively this year although replicas will be available." A standard Fred Perry polo shirt sells for around US$74, while the anniversary edition costs around $99. Kidd notes the Fred Perry label "has not issued shirts with initials since the mid-1970s," as the company "has been a fading presence among the leading players." But the company "hopes Murray can help it to regain a toehold in the sportswear market" (LONDON TIMES, 6/16). In London, Paul Newman notes Fred Perry has "produced a white cotton tennis bomber jacket, a white kit bag and a cream sweater reminiscent of the cardigan Roger Federer wore at Wimbledon last year" from Nike. But "apart from the shirt and shorts, Murray would not say exactly what he will be wearing when he goes on court next week" at Wimbledon (London INDEPENDENT, 6/16). Also in London, Lisa Armstrong writes Murray's makeover is "unashamedly retro," and "harks back to the glory days of 1970s tennis." Armstrong: "Out go the puzzling proportions and lurid colours, so disastrous on pale and sunburnt skins" (LONDON TIMES, 6/16).
