NBC's Stanley Cup Game Seven Most-Viewed NHL Game Since '73

Friday's Penguins-Red Wings Game Seven
Most-Viewed NHL Game In 36 Years
NBC earned a 4.3 final rating and 8.079 million viewers for Friday's Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals Game Seven, marking the best rating for a series-ending game since Devils-Ducks in '03 and the most-viewed NHL game in 36 years. Friday's game ranked as the No. 1 program for the night in every category, including ratings and viewers. NBC also drew a 3.2 rating in adults 18-49 for the game, marking the network's top-rated Friday night in the demo since the Beijing Olympics. NBC averaged a 3.1 rating and 5.612 million viewers for its five telecasts of the Penguins-Red Wings series, slightly down in ratings, but up in viewership from a 3.2 rating and 5.408 million viewers for four telecasts last year. The viewership figure also marks the best NHL Finals audience figure since 5.8 million viewers watched three telecasts of the Red Wings-Hurricanes series on ABC in '02. For 13 NHL Playoff telecasts this postseason, NBC averaged a 1.9 rating and 3.152 million viewers, up 5.6% and 7.7%, respectively, from a 1.8 rating and 2.928 million viewers for 13 telecasts last year. For all 65 NHL Playoff telecasts this season, NBC and Versus averaged 1.367 million viewers, up 17.4% from 1.164 million viewers for 65 telecasts in '08 (THE DAILY). DAILY VARIETY's Rick Kissell writes the Game Seven viewership is "even more impressive since the game aired on lightly watched Friday" (DAILY VARIETY, 6/16).

ALL ABOUT LOCATION: In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich wrote, "If the NHL is hoping to put a bigger dent in the American market, and maybe add a few more eyeballs in Canada, too, it might consider finding better camera positions in many arenas." Coverage of Friday's Game Seven from Joe Louis Arena was "severely handicapped by the fact viewers couldn't see what was going on when play was along the near boards," and Pittsburgh's 48-year-old Mellon Arena "was no better." Meanwhile, Zelkovich wrote during Game Seven, NBC on-ice analyst Pierre McGuire "showed why that feature is so invaluable." McGuire noted that Red Wings C Henrik Zetterberg and RW Johan Franzen "had been caught on long shifts again, which might have explained why the Wings were cooked." Zelkovich: "A guy in the booth may not have noticed this" (THESTAR.com, 6/15).

NORTHERN LIGHTS: The CBC drew 3.529 million viewers for Game Seven, making it the "most-watched game of the series" on the net. But despite the strong final game numbers, the CBC's broadcast of the series "failed to duplicate last year's numbers." The net averaged 2.154 million viewers for the series, down 7% from last year's six-game series between the same teams (CP, 5/15). The viewership figures were the "highest ever for an all-American final" on the CBC (THESTAR.com, 6/15).

Ilitch Upset With NHL's Scheduling Of First
Two Stanley Cup Final Games Back-To-Back
TAKE A BREAK ON BACK-TO-BACK: Red Wings Owner Mike Ilitch said that he "wasn't pleased with the NHL's submission to NBC, ensuring that the first two games of the finals would be played back-to-back in prime time on weekend evenings regardless of when the series began." Ilitch: "That's not hockey. They took a high risk there" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 6/16).

STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT: In St. Petersburg, Tom Jones wrote the NHL is "basking in the afterglow of an exciting Stanley Cup final and now comes all the talk of how this will be a turning point for the NHL, how new fans have been attracted and how the NHL is headed for an upswing in popularity." Jones: "Haven't we heard this before?" (TAMPABAY.com, 6/15).
