Univ. Of Minnesota Could See Alcohol Ban At All Seats In Stadium

TCF Bank Stadium Will Likely Be
Dry For Its Inaugural Season
Members of the Univ. of Minnesota (UM) Board of Regents have “expressed frustration” about a possible ban of alcohol at the school’s new TCF Bank Stadium, and some have suggested that the school “ask the Legislature to reconsider the laws that prompted the proposal,” according to Doug Belden of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS. UM President Robert Bruininks Friday proposed the ban after explaining that new Minnesota state laws “mean alcohol would be available to everyone or no one” at school athletic facilities. Alcohol was planned to be available “only in … premium seats” at the new stadium, which opens in September. The board will vote on the ban later this month, but Regent Dean Johnson indicated that the stadium “would likely be dry for its inaugural season.” However, he “hopes to change that for next year.” Johnson said that UM officials “need to reach out to legislators and the governor.” Johnson added that money “has been raised and stadium suites sold with the understanding that liquor would be part of the premium seating experience, and the Legislature’s actions are infringing on the university’s autonomy.” Bruininks previously indicated that the school would “contact those who have bought premium seats to talk about alternative incentives.” Regent David Larson said that had officials “known legislators were going to change the rules, [UM] might have made different decisions about premium seating and stadium design.” Larson: “I find this to be rather alarming” (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 6/13).
