NBC Praised For Coverage Of Penguins' Dramatic Game Seven Win

NBC's Coverage Of Penguins-Red Wings Game
Seven Praised For Enthusiasm, Camerawork
Hockey "gets a bad rap as a TV sport," but NBC's coverage of Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals Game Seven was "enthusiastic and its camerawork was spectacular," according to Jason Gay of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The behind-the-net video of Penguins G Marc-Andre Fleury "flopping around, holding off a furious last-minute Detroit charge made us feel like we were right there on the ice." Gay: "No matter which side you were on, you spent the last five minutes of this game yelling at the TV" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/15). In N.Y., Phil Mushnick writes if NBC NHL play-by-play announcer Mike Emrick "chose baseball, football or basketball, he'd be known as one of America's most cherished sportscasters" (N.Y. POST, 6/15). In Boston, Kevin Paul Dupont noted in the old NHL, "Hockey Night in Canada" "would have hijacked" Game Seven "for a Saturday night." Dupont: "This tells us that NBC is getting better at working the puck along the boards" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/14).

AMONG THE CONVERTED: In K.C., Martin Manley wrote under the header, "NHL's Game Seven Was Fantastic TV Event." Friday night marked the first time Manley watched a full hockey game, and he wrote, "I have to say it was entertaining. I've generally been pretty critical of the sport -- specifically on TV. However, the more I watched, the more watchable it became. I'm sure game seven and the Penguins had something to do with it, but even so, it surprised me" (K.C. STAR, 6/14).

CBC Misses Presentation Of
Conn Smythe Trophy To Malkin
CANADIAN COVERAGE: In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich writes CBC analyst Don Cherry was "right on the mark" during Friday's broadcast when he praised Penguins C Maxime Talbot, who scored the Penguins' two goals in Game Seven. However, the CBC was "so intent on interviewing Talbot following Friday's game, it missed the presentation" of the Conn Smythe Trophy to Penguins C Evgeni Malkin (TORONTO STAR, 6/15). GLOBESPORTS.com's Bruce Dowbiggin notes CBC play-by-play announcer Jim Hughson during the finals was "measurably better than the 2009 Bob Cole he replaced." Hughson "can shape a game as well as the recent vintage Cole, but he also allows other voices into the passion play," and he also has a "contemporary sense of humour and an eye for the absurd humour that Cole misses." Cole "can still rattle the timbers with his wonderful pipes, but Hughson has vocal range to spare as well." Dowbiggin: "It's time to invite Hughson into Canada's homes with open arms. The baton has been passed" (GLOBESPORTS.com, 6/12).

RATINGS DELAY: Due to the digital conversion that took place early Saturday morning, overnight Nielsen ratings for Game Seven are unavailable. Final ratings for the game should be available later today (THE DAILY). In Buffalo, Alan Pergament noted during the NHL and NBA playoffs, the NBA "has done surprisingly well in the ratings in Western New York for a traditional hockey area." But when the two sports "competed head to head on broadcast networks" Tuesday, it was "no contest." The NHL's "dominance" over the NBA Tuesday confirmed that Buffalo "is a hockey town" (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/13).
