MLB Productions Follows Phillies Bullpen For New Reality Series

MLB Productions (MLBP) has "chosen to focus on the ups and downs of the Phillies bullpen from spring training to the All-Star break" as the basis of MLB Network's new show, "The Pen," according to Ed Barkowitz of the PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS. The six-show series debuts Sunday at 8:00pm ET and "continues each Sunday -- except July 5 -- through July 26" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 6/11). MLBP Exec Producer David Gavant said, "It's the first reality series where a baseball team has allowed anybody to follow them through a season." USA TODAY's Michael Hiestand noted while MLBP has had crews "hang around -- on the field and off -- with" the team's bullpen since Spring Training, it has also "put eavesdropping microphones around bullpen phones." The crews also "placed in the Phillies bullpen a camera that's controlled from MLB Productions' offices" in New Jersey. Gavant said that the Phillies "have been very cooperative, including allowing cameras into meetings involving the front office and coaches" (USA TODAY, 6/10). In California, John Maffei notes cameras "follow the players everywhere -- from fishing trips to youth baseball games to the White House." MLB Net Producer Danny Fields "even suited up as a catcher with a camera attached to his mask to get footage during spring training." Gavant: "Our goal was to shed light on the pressure-filled lives these players live on the field and how they unwind off the field" (NORTH COUNTY TIMES, 6/12).
