Cup Finals Game Seven To Serve As "Symbolic Snapshot" Of NHL

Crosby Could Win His First Stanley Cup
With A Victory In Friday's Game Seven
When NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman awards the Stanley Cup to the winner of Friday night's Game Seven of the Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals series, the moment will "serve as a symbolic snapshot of the state of the sport," according to Corey Masisak of the WASHINGTON TIMES. If the Red Wings win, the league's "premier franchise will have put an exclamation point on one of the greatest stretches of sustained excellence of the past two decades in the four major sports." But if the Penguins and C Sidney Crosby win, it "could signal a new era for the NHL," as there are "many young stars in the NHL, but Crosby taking the Cup from Bettman would signify a changing of the guard" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 6/12). In Detroit, Bob Wojnowski writes the NHL already "has gotten what it wanted, a terrific Finals between the wily Wings and the swift-rising Penguins" (DETROIT NEWS, 6/12).

LATE LATE SHOW: NBC Sports President Ken Schanzer said net officials are "well aware" Game Seven could go into overtime and delay the start of "The Tonight Show." Schanzer: "Everyone is very cool with it. We go until it's over" (NEWSDAY.com, 6/11). On Long Island, Neil Best noted NBC "prefers games on weekends, where the stakes are lower." Schanzer: "We've decided for a whole host of reasons this is the best schedule for us, taking into consideration some competitive realities." Meanwhile, Schanzer added he thinks the Red Wings and Penguins are "arguably the two teams in which there's the greatest interest." Schanzer: "They may not be the maximum market size. ... But these are right now the two most popular franchises" (NEWSDAY.com, 6/11).
