NBA Earns "A+" For Race, Best-Ever Gender Mark In Annual Study
Univ. of Central Florida (UCF) Institute for Diversity & Ethics in Sport Dir Richard Lapchick in his '09 NBA Racial & Gender Report Card awarded the league an "A+" for race and a "B+/A-" for gender, earning a combined "A." The NBA, which has maintained the best grade among men's professional sports leagues for race for two decades, earned its highest-ever grade for gender. For the '08-09 season, 35% of employees at the NBA league office were of color, up from 34% from the previous year and marking the highest percentage in the history of any professional sport. At the beginning of this season, there were five African-American team Presidents, down from seven during the '07-08 season but still the highest for any sport. Also, the percentage of people of color with NBA team senior administration positions remained steady at 22%, tying the league's all-time high. Meanwhile, women accounted for 43% of the employees at the league office, up from 41% during the '07-08 campaign and higher than any other men's league (UCF).
