ABC Gets 8.6 Rating, 14.196 Million Viewers For Lakers-Magic Game 3

Ratings For Finals' First Three
Games Down 6.8% From '08
ABC earned an 8.6 final rating (14.196 million viewers) for Tuesday's Lakers-Magic NBA Finals Game Three, down 6.5% from a 9.2 rating (14.512 million viewers) for Celtics-Lakers NBA Finals Game Three last year. While ratings through Game Three are down 6.8% from last year's first three games, ABC is averaging 13.794 million viewers, on par with last year's 13.790 million viewers. Game Three was also Tuesday night's top TV program across all key male and adult demos. Additionally, each of the three NBA Finals games have been the most-viewed program of the night, and the games account for the three most-viewed programs since the finale of Fox' "American Idol" on May 20 (THE DAILY).

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS: YAHOO SPORTS' Dan Wetzel wrote the '09 NBA season was "supposed to come down to a predestined clash" between Lakers G Kobe Bryant and Cavaliers F LeBron James. But the Magic "came along and ruined the plans," and they have "turned this into every bit of a series worth watching." The "strong TV ratings prove nearly 14 million fans got the message that the marketers didn't." Wetzel: "Who needs LeBron?" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 6/10). In Oklahoma City, Berry Tramel noted 32 of 83 NBA Playoffs games so far this year "have been determined by single digits, and 22 have gone down to the final shot." Also, more than 25% of the NBA Playoffs games "have been spell-binding all 48 minutes." Tramel: "We didn't deserve a great Finals after the great playoffs, but the NBA seems to be delivering anyway" (DAILY OKLAHOMAN, 6/11).

Writer Says Chemistry Between Johnson (l),
Smith, Barkley Unmatched In Current Sports TV
DYNAMITE VOICES: In L.A., Lisa Dillman writes the "loose byplay and chemistry" between TNT NBA studio analysts Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith is "unmatched in current sports television, and the NBA is attempting to capitalize on their immense popularity by putting them on NBA TV before and after the Lakers-Magic contests." Johnson: "It's a different thing. We're hoping that folks will watch a pregame show for half an hour, watch the game and look back to NBA TV and see what Kenny and Charles have to say about it. It's all part of the process of trying to grow NBA TV and make it a real player" (L.A. TIMES, 6/11).
