Golden Boy, AEG Team To Launch Upstart Boxing Series On Versus

"Fight Night Club" Will Feature
Fighters In Nightclub Setting |
Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) and AEG tonight on Versus at 9:00pm ET will launch "Fight Night Club," a monthly boxing series featuring L.A.-based "prospects and fighters in a nightclub setting" at the 2,300-seat Club Nokia, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. The first four "FNC" cards will air live on Versus and will be streamed on Ring magazine's Web site. GBP President Oscar De La Hoya said that "with or without television the series will continue beyond the September commitment from Versus," which is paying a "'minimal' license fee" for the series. De La Hoya said, "It's an investment toward the grass roots of boxing. That's where it all starts. ... The idea is to showcase those young fighters who are fighting their butt off and never get the credit." The show, co-produced by AEG and GBP, will be hosted by Mario Solis with analysts Bernard Hopkins and Doug Fisher. De La Hoya pointed out that the "atmosphere at Club Nokia is as important to Golden Boy as the telecast, which is why ticket prices have been kept down," ranging from $28-65. Fans also are "invited to stick around after the bouts for music, dancing and a chance to mingle with the fighters when the room is converted from a boxing arena back into a nightclub" (ESPN.com, 6/10). Yahoo.com also will carry a live feed of the event (USA TODAY, 6/11).
