Red Wings-Pens Stanley Cup Game Six Earns 3.4 Rating On NBC

NBC Averaging 2.8 Rating Through Four
Telecasts Of Red Wings-Penguins Finals
NBC earned a 3.4 final Nielsen rating (5.8 million viewers) for Tuesday's Red Wings-Penguins Stanley Cup Finals Game Six, which aired opposite the Lakers-Magic NBA Finals Game Three on ABC. The 3.4 rating is down 15% from a 4.0 rating (6.8 million viewers) for the clinching Game Six of last year's finals between the two teams, which aired on a Wednesday night. Through four telecasts on NBC, the finals are averaging a 2.8 rating and 5.0 million viewers, down 13% in ratings, but up 11% in viewership from last year's 3.2 rating and 4.5 million viewers for the four games on the net (THE DAILY). Meanwhile, in Toronto, Chris Zelkovich reported the CBC averaged 2.596 million viewers for its broadcast of Game Six, providing the net its "biggest audience of the playoffs." The 2.596 million total was down 6% from last year's Game Six, which was the series finale. Zelkovich noted the CBC "no doubt is expecting a 3-million-plus audience for Game 7, but even that won't get the total series average up to last year's" (THESTAR.com, 6/10).

JUST THE BEGINNING: In Detroit, Drew Sharp writes the Red Wings and Penguins "possess all the natural ingredients -- skill, antagonism and, perhaps most important, the likelihood they'll meet again in years to come." Sharp: "The NHL has struck the mother lode. NBC may be looking at a ratings bonanza Friday night because they have two star-laden teams and two more traditional hockey franchises." All of this is "music to" NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman's ears, as his league has "gained a newfound cache, the home of professional sports' latest virulent grudge match" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 6/11). USA TODAY's Christine Brennan writes due to HDTV, hockey is now "watchable and even understandable for people who didn't grow up in or near Canada," and it is "entirely possible that better times are ahead for the sport, due in large part to technology." Also, the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since '06 will be decided by a seventh game Friday night, and "best of all, the game won't have to compete with the NBA, which plays [tonight], meaning all those basketball fans won't have to wonder what they missed" (USA TODAY, 6/11).

Writer Says Signs Encouraging For NHL
As U.S. Viewership Increases
UPPING THE ANTE: In Vancouver, Ed Willes writes this year's series "couldn't have arrived at a better time" for the league. Signs are "encouraging for the NHL," as U.S. TV numbers are "up significantly and tomorrow night's Game 7 should provide a ratings bonanza for the league." Willes: "This series, more than anything, has given the NHL an event that has made an impact on the U.S. sporting conscience" (Vancouver PROVINCE, 6/11). FanHouse.com's Jay Mariotti: "I'm expecting big ratings. This is the best showcase for Bettman's league in a long time." But Denver Post columnist Woody Paige said, "Gary Bettman should get more grief than Bud Selig because he keeps scheduling those games on the same night as the NBA Finals. Finally, they're going to get it right for the last game" ("Around The Horn," ESPN, 6/10).

NET IMPACT? The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER's James Hibberd reports CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" Tuesday earned a higher rating than NBC's "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" for the "first time since the NBC late-night franchise switched hosts from Jay Leno to O'Brien last week." Hibberd notes one "mitigating factor was that NBC aired live NHL Stanley Cup Finals coverage Tuesday in primetime, which led to low-rated local programming during the later hours on the West Coast, potentially providing 'Tonight' with a lead-in weaker than usual" (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 6/11).
