Goodell Will Climb Mt. Rainier
In July To Benefit United Way
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Seahawks and MLS Sounders CEO Tod Leiweke and coach JIM MORA JR. will join mountain climber ED VIESTURS in climbing Mt. Rainier on July 5 to benefit the United Way of King County (WA). The United Way said that it has "already received enough pledges for the 'Climb for the Community' from Seattle-area corporations and foundations to provide 1.5 million pounds of additional food for the agency's emergency food system" in the county (AP, 6/9).

CHECK PLUS: In Utah, Brad Rock profiles Blues and MLS Real Salt Lake Owner DAVE CHECKETTS, and writes "don't dismiss" Checketts' bid to buy the Rams. In terms of "personal wealth, Checketts is no PAUL ALLEN or ROBERT KRAFT," but his company, SCP Worldwide, "acquires assets, such as professional teams." It seemed "unlikely he'd be able to bring and/or keep" an MLS franchise to Utah, but "before long, he was presiding over a ribbon-cutting ceremony" at Rio Tinto Stadium. Checketts "surprised many when he acquired the Blues, too," and now he "hopes to invent an NFL team for himself" (DESERET NEWS, 6/10).

BUFFALO SOLDIER: In N.Y., Hakim & Confessore report Sabres Owner TOM GOLISANO "spent heavily" to support New York state Senate Majority Leader MALCOLM SMITH and "other Democrats win control of the Senate in the November election, and was angry to hear they were now planning to raise taxes on the wealthy." Golisano in recent weeks "secretly planned with Republicans to persuade two Democrats to join them in ousting" Smith (N.Y. TIMES, 6/10). Meanwhile, Golisano yesterday confirmed that he is dating former tennis player MONICA SELES (N.Y. POST, 6/10).
