NFL Refutes Claim Retired Players' Benefits Would Be Slashed

Smith Claims Retired Players'
Benefits Would Be Slashed
The NFL is "refuting the assertion" by NFPLA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith that benefits for "needy retired players would be slashed in an uncapped year," according to Peter King of SI.com. Smith said that he is "highly motivated to get a [new CBA] deal done with the owners in the next 10 months to avoid the league slashing benefits to some handicapped veterans by as much as three-quarters if the league ever came to the imposition of an uncapped year, which the league says would happen if no deal is reached by next spring." An NFL official indicated that the league "does have the option to reduce payouts to retired players in an uncapped year, but there is no requirement to do so." King: "Any decision on this is a ways off. ... With the strides Commissioner Roger Goodell has made in repairing bridges with retired players, I'd be surprised if he imposed such a heavy cut with the retirees." However, NFLPA Dir of Benefits Miki Yaras-Davis said, "The one and only way to guarantee these benefits is to get a successful CBA signed before an uncapped year. Otherwise we fear that they will go the way of coaches pensions" (SI.com, 6/9).

FREE FALLING: In Denver, Mike Klis noted a "glitch in the NFL's reopened [CBA] has left 270 NFL players ... staring at the money-losing proposition of not becoming qualified for unrestricted free agency after this season." Under the CBA agreement the NFL had been operating under, players "were eligible for free agency after their fourth season." But NFL owners "exercised their right to essentially void the current agreement after this season." The "most notable fallout from operating without a contract is unrestricted free-agent eligibility moves from after a fourth season to after the sixth." Broncos QB Kyle Orton: "I pay my agent to think about all that stuff. I don't worry about it. We make a lot of money, anyway" (DENVER POST, 6/6).
