Sources Indicate Mayfield Tested Positive For Methamphetamine

Mayfield Claims He
Inhaled Fumes
Suspended NASCAR driver/team owner Jeremy Mayfield "tested positive for methamphetamine during a random drug screening May 1" at Richmond Int'l Raceway (RIR), according to sources cited by Ryan McGee of ESPN.com. In court papers filed over the past two weeks it was "revealed and acknowledged by Mayfield that he had ingested a double dosage of over-the-counter allergy medication Claritin-D immediately prior to the Richmond drug test." Mayfield also "revealed that he was taking prescription Adderall-XR." However, a third drug "came up positive during the urine-based Richmond test and had not been previously identified." The name of the drug in question has been "redacted from court documents and was not specified by either Mayfield or NASCAR because of the conditions of a May 29 gag order." Neither NASCAR nor Mayfield are "allowed to comment because of the gag order" (ESPN.com, 6/9). Mayfield in court documents claimed he "inhaled fumes from a fiery wreck" in the April 26 Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway (CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.com, 6/9). ESPN's Brad Daugherty said, "I applaud NASCAR for stepping up and implementing a program that could capture information and help clean up the sport to the best of its knowledge. It has to get better, though. There needs to be a substance list that each of the teams have" ("NASCAR Now," ESPN2, 6/9).
