Joint NBA/NCAA Youth Basketball Venture To Launch As iHoops

The youth basketball joint venture between the NBA and the NCAA will be called iHoops, and it will launch iHoops.com this fall. The move comes more than a year after the NBA and the NCAA created the Indianapolis-based venture that they say aims to improve the quality of youth basketball programs. Active.com, a division of The Active Network, is the technology partner for the venture and will run iHoops.com, an online youth basketball community offering training for players, certifications programs for coaches and officials, as well social networking. "I think of the site as the backbone of the initiative,” said iHoops CEO Kevin Weiberg. "We are still working on a specific launch date." Weiberg also said that former TCU men’s basketball coach Neil Dougherty has been named Dir of Athlete & Coach Programs of iHoops. In addition, Ronnie Zeidel, former President of Clutch Media Marketing, has been named VP/Marketing Partnerships of iHoops. Both will report to Weiberg. In addition to funding by the NBA and the NCAA, iHoops expects to generate revenue through marketing partnership deals. "As we go forward, our hope is that iHoops can stand on its own feet in generating revenue,” Weiberg said. The initiative will be announced prior to tonight's Lakers-Magic NBA Finals Game Three in Orlando.
