WNBA Franchise Notes: Chance For Fresh Start For Lynx

WNBA Lynx Hoping Low Ticket
Prices Will Attract Fans
In St. Paul, Tom Powers wrote the '09 WNBA season "really is a beginning" for the Minnesota Lynx. The team has been "plagued by high turnover during their 10-year history," and they "never have had enough success to catch fire." The team also "has become a money pit for owner Glen Taylor." But "perhaps their blue-collar approach and low ticket prices will become all the rage during this rotten economy." Saturday's opening night crowd at Target Center against the Chicago Sky "was announced as 8,708." Powers: "I don't think, if you counted them all up, there were 8,708 teeth in the building. But the fans that were there appeared to have a good time." If the Lynx "really do play well and develop a team personality, there could be a market for them." Powers: "They are the anti-NBA: low salaries, team basketball, maximum effort. Surely that must appeal to a lot of people" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 6/7).

FEVER PITCH: In Indianapolis, Bob Kravitz wrote Indiana Fever co-Owner Herb Simon has "hinted strongly on several occasions ... that the Fever is a money pit and he cannot afford to continue throwing good money after bad." Kravitz: "If there's an Indiana Fever team here next summer, I'll be shocked." If you are a "decent businessman, and you're hemorrhaging money while your WNBA franchise is doing nothing to improve your bottom line, where do you cut your budget?" Kravitz: "Really, who could blame Simon if, at season's end, he decided to sell or fold the team?" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/7).

NOTES: Mystics President Sheila Johnson said the team has “close to 5,000 season tickets sold” for the season (“Washington Post Live,” CSN Mid-Atlantic, 6/5)....In Atlanta, Mike Tierney noted it is "slightly cheaper to attend" an Atlanta Dream game this season at Philips Arena compared to last season, as the "average ticket price is $26.05, lower than the $27.29 in '08" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 6/6).
