ABC Earns 9.9 Overnight Rating For Lakers-Magic NBA Finals Game Two

ABC Earns 9.9 Overnight Nielsen
Rating For Magic-Lakers Game Two
Last night's Magic-Lakers NBA Finals Game Two on ABC earned a 9.9 overnight Nielsen rating from 8:00-11:00pm ET, down 2.9% from Lakers-Celtics Game Two last year, but up 43.5% from a 6.9 for Spurs-Cavaliers in '07. Based on overnight ratings, ABC won the night in primetime from 7:00-11:00pm ET, averaging a 7.8 rating, ahead of CBS (6.1), NBC (3.4) and Fox (2.8) (THE DAILY). The game among adults 18-49 earned a 4.7 rating, beating out the 1.3 for the Tony Awards on CBS in the same time period. The 4.7 rating was also up 6.8% from a 4.4 for Thursday night's Game One (TVBYTHENUMBERS.com, 6/8). In N.Y., Bob Raissman noted NBA Commissioner David Stern, TNT and ESPN have gone "gaga over playoff ratings," because for cable TV, the "numbers were excellent." But the "same question remains. Will the split cable package lead to big numbers for the Finals, which air on ABC, the network with a limited" regular-season schedule? (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/7).

I LIKE THE NIGHT TIME: In Boston, Marc Spears notes five of the potential seven games in the NBA Finals tip off at 9:00pm ET, with Games Two and Five starting at 8:00pm. ESPN Senior Dir of Programming & Acquisitions Douglas White said that 9:00pm starts are the "most popular, although they finish near midnight on the East Coast." White: "Last year, the NBA wanted some reaction to some of the fan feedback for the 9 o'clock starts. We realized for maybe the folks on the East Coast the games were running past 11 o'clock, which maybe was a little bit late. We wanted to do something new to help those fans in terms of viewership." White added the 9:00pm starts "allow us to service the West Coast fans. That's something we have to take into consideration, the entire country. Not just the East Coast" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/8).

Van Gundy Providing
Entertainment During Finals
TALENT SHOW: In Buffalo, Alan Pergament wrote ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy "provided some much-needed entertainment" during last Thursday's Game One. After ABC aired a segment featuring Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, Jeff's brother, talking to the team, Jeff said, "If this coaching stuff doesn't work out, reality TV. 'Jon and Kate Plus 8,' they're going to have a run for their money." Then, after ABC play-by-play voice Mike Breen read a promo for a "cell phone company by saying voting for the game's best player continues," Jeff Van Gundy added, "No. Voting is already closed. Kobe Bryant" (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/6). In L.A., Diane Pucin notes ESPN Radio analyst Jack Ramsay remains "sharp as ever" at the age of 84, as he is "gently willing to teach players, reporters and fans." Ramsay is a "treasure," and fans should "give him a listen" (L.A. TIMES, 6/8). The N.Y. DAILY NEWS' Raissman wrote ABC studio analyst Magic Johnson has a "propensity to telegraph his analysis and comes close, very close, to being totally cliché driven" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/7).

BASKETBALL WITHOUT BORDERS: The L.A. TIMES' Pucin reported the NBA Finals this year for the first time are "available to a Middle Eastern audience in Arabic on Al Jazeera and for the first time since 2005 are on a free television channel in Mexico." The NBA indicated that over 250 int'l journalists were in L.A. to cover Games One and Two, while "more are expected in Orlando." The league also has been "running an elaborate operation in a separate trailer at Staples Center that provides TV feeds to 215 countries in 42 languages." NBA VP/Int'l Television Matt Brabants: "Not only are those markets wanting game coverage, but they want more out-of-game content, more than just a nightly game. Turkey is a great example. With Hedo Turkoglu doing so well in Orlando, Turkish television wants more Magic games but also more features on the NBA" (L.A. TIMES, 6/6).
