Santa Clara Not Worried About Potential Suit Over 49ers From S.F.

Newsom Has Said S.F.
Could Sue Santa Clara
S.F. Mayor Gavin Newsom last week said the city could sue Santa Clara "over matters such as the use" of the name "49ers" and "San Francisco" should Santa Clara voters approve a $937M stadium deal with the team, but Santa Clara Mayor Patricia Mahan said that she "doesn't expect that to happen," according to Carla Marinucci of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Newsom: "We can sue because San Francisco is not Santa Clara. ... We can deal with anti-trust issues and deal with federal stuff." But Mahan insisted that she "wouldn't want the team to change its name." Mahan: "The name can't change. The ID is with the team. The ID is with the [Bay Area]" (SFGATE.com, 6/5). Meanwhile, in a front-page piece for the S.F. CHRONICLE, John Cote noted "significant challenges lie ahead" for Santa Clara in the city's pursuit of the 49ers, and the "most obvious is convincing Santa Clara voters to back a deal that calls for a $79[M] public subsidy and another $35[M] from a new tax on guests at eight hotels near the stadium site." Stadium supporters were the "clear majority" at a recent Santa Clara City Council meeting, but it is "unclear how the city as a whole views the project" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/7).

DEFENSIVE STANCE: In S.F., C.W. Nevius wrote the city of S.F. is "fumbling its chance to keep the 49ers." The "official stance in City Hall is that Santa Clara's stadium proposal is bogus and the numbers are shaky," but Newsom is "starting to make it look as if [S.F. is] settling for second place and rooting for the other guy to stumble." Nevius: "Instead of bashing Santa Clara, Newsom ought to get out the old pom-poms and lead the cheers for the team to stay. ... A little pride swallowing is in order" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/6). In California, Lowell Cohn noted the 49ers have indicated that they could sell seat licenses for the proposed Santa Clara stadium, and wrote, "When you think about buying seat licenses for the ... San Francisco 49ers five years from now or whenever they get their new place, think of paying many thousands of dollars for a PSL. ... This complaint about PSLs is not a knock on the Santa Clara deal. It's a knock on the sports business and how fans always take it in the chops" (Santa Rosa PRESS DEMOCRAT, 6/6).
