IN MEMORY: Former Indians Owner DICK JACOBS has passed away after a lengthy illness at the age of 83. Jacobs bought the Indians in '86 for $40M, and the team, which "had been one of the weakest teams in baseball over the previous 30 years," was "restored during the Jacobs regime." Jacobs in '00 sold the team to current Owner LARRY DOLAN (CLEVELAND.com, 6/5). In Cleveland, Bill Livingston writes, "Every brick of what is now called Progressive Field was his, every part of the rebuilding process of the Indians bore his imprint. ... Jacobs took the most forlorn franchise in cut-throat baseball, gave it back its pride, awakened the 'Sleeping Giant' of the fan base, and made Indian summers more than an unseasonable warm spell in autumn. He was the greatest owner in the history of this city" (CLEVELAND.com, 6/5).
