NBC, NHL Reach Agreement To Extend Relationship Two More Years

New Two-Year NHL/NBC Rights Deal Will
Reportedly Maintain Current Financial Set Up
NBC and the NHL are "set to announce an extension to their relationship for another two years," according to Bruce Dowbiggin of GLOBESPORTS.com. The extension will "likely be a continuation of the no-money-down/split-revenues-after-costs arrangement that has existed" since the '04-05 NHL lockout. And despite the "hiccup of NBC switching away from a playoff overtime to a Preakness Stakes prep show" in '07, the relationship has "worked reasonably well for both sides." The NHL Winter Classic has drawn "strong numbers" on New Year's Day against college football bowl games, while NBC for Games One and Two of this year's Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals averaged 4.87 million viewers over the weekend. (GLOBESPORTS.com, 6/4).

HAPPY HOME: In DC, Tim Lemke wrote there are some people who "will never be convinced that Versus is the right place for the NHL, but it's hard to argue that it hasn't worked out pretty well for the network this year." Versus President Jamie Davis: "We had an unbelievable [regular] season, we've had the best postseason, we had the best conference finals in over a decade ... the momentum is going and it's just fantastically exciting." Davis added that the net is "hopeful the NHL buzz will carry over" to Versus' IndyCar, Tour de France and World Extreme Cagefighting coverage (WASHINGTONTIMES.com, 6/4).

CHILLY RECEPTION: In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich noted Penguins-Red Wings "isn't doing all that well" in Canada, as the CBC's broadcast of Game Three was viewed by 1.87 million viewers, down 8% from Game Three of last year's Finals. However, the Penguins Thursday night tying the series at two games each, Zelkovich wrote, "Maybe now that the series is getting more interesting, things will pick up for CBC" (THESTAR.com, 6/4).
