NBC Bringing Its "Inside The Glass" To '10 Olympic Hockey Tourney

Agreement Will Allow McGuire To Be Between
Benches Of Competing Teams During '10 Games
Three years after bringing its "Inside the Glass" analyst position to NHL broadcasts, NBC is planning to bring it to the Winter Olympics. An agreement with the Int'l Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Vancouver Olympics organizers and the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) will allow NBC to put analyst Pierre McGuire between the benches of competing teams throughout the '10 Olympics. McGuire will be able to comment on everything from the mood on a national team's bench to strategic decisions made by coaches. Canadian rights-holder CTV plans to pick up McGuire's feed and use it as well. NBC Olympics Exec VP & Exec Producer David Neal praised the IIHF's and OBS' flexibility and willingness to try something different, saying that the addition of "Inside the Glass" offered an example of how in the "incredibly complicated world of the Olympics, things just line up." Of "Inside the Glass," Neal said, "These days, very rarely do you find something that revolutionizes the way a sport's covered. This is one of those unique things." He expects it to revolutionize NBC's coverage of Olympic hockey the same way it has revolutionized the network's coverage of the NHL. McGuire said he does not expect calling an Olympics from "Inside the Glass" to be any different from calling an NHL game. His focus will be on relaying the energy of the arena and capturing details the viewer might miss like a minor injury or an equipment problem. McGuire: "This will just enhance the Olympic experience I believe." He said he does not anticipate having any problems with players speaking other languages on the bench, adding, "Hockey's pretty much a universal language."
