Comcast Moves NBA TV To Digital Classic Tier, Adds 8.8 Million Subs
By John Ourand & John Lombardo, Staff Writers
Comcast completed its long-awaited deal to move NBA TV to its "Digital Classic" tier, a move that will add 8.8 million subs to the channel's distribution, pushing it to more than 23 million. NBA TV had been on the cable operator's digital sports and entertainment tier. A formal announcement is planned to come later this morning. The deal comes just weeks after Comcast completed similar moves with other league-owned networks from the NFL and NHL. NBA Commissioner David Stern has said that he plans to get the channel in front of about 40 million homes eventually. In order to make the move, the NBA dropped its license fee from about $0.28-0.29 per subscriber per month to a rate around $0.20. The NFL and NHL also dropped their license fees to move off Comcast’s sports tier. As part of the deal, Comcast also retained rights to NBA League Pass and the out-of-market package's broadband component.
