Golf Channel To Put Live Mic On Player During LPGA Championship

Kim Will Be Mic'ed During Opening Round
Of McDonald's LPGA Championship
Golf Channel and the LPGA are planning to put a microphone on one player at next week’s McDonald’s LPGA Championship, and conduct on-course interviews with some players as they make the turn from the 9th to the 10th holes. Christina Kim, one of the more outgoing personalities on tour, will be mic’ed during Thursday’s telecast, which will also include video clips from a Golf Channel interview conducted earlier in the week. Golf Channel and the LPGA first tested the telecast enhancements two weeks ago at the Corning Classic in New York. Golf Channel mic’ed Christie McPherson that Thursday and caught friendly trash talk between her and Michelle Wie. That Saturday, the network interviewed then-leader Karine Icher at the turn, and on Sunday spoke with Yani Tseng, who talked about the need to be more aggressive on the back nine before coming from behind to win the tournament. The on-course access was initially discussed between Golf Channel and LPGA execs during a recent players summit in Virginia. LPGA Chief Communications Officer David Higdon said there are “crazier ideas floating around” but declined to elaborate. It was also presented to players yesterday during a meeting at the State Farm Classic in Illinois, said a source. The LPGA and Golf Channel are in the final year of a five-year cable deal and start a new 10-year relationship in '10. The two sides are trying to find a way to better present the personalities of the players without infringing upon the competition. “We want to look at the whole way the sport is covered and see if there are things that can help connect fans to our players,” said Higdon. NBC experimented with mic’ing PGA Tour caddies at the Shell Houston Open earlier this year but drew widespread resistance from players. Golf Channel has experimented with “at the turn” interviews on the Nationwide Tour, and Champions Tour players regularly take part in live on-course interviews.
