NFL Facility Notes: NFLPA HQs Damaged In Early-Morning Fire

Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Looking
For Corporations For Facility's Naming Rights
NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith said that the NFLPA HQs in DC “suffered limited damage by a fire Tuesday morning.” Smith said that the fire “apparently began in Smith’s office at approximately 5 a.m. and nobody was injured.” Smith: “Most of the damage was caused by the internal sprinkler system. We don’t know a lot more, other than there is an investigation that is now under way.” Smith added that there is “no initial finding of arson but the NFLPA has given access to its security video system to investigators” (ESPN.com, 6/2).

BLACK & GOLD: The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority has hired L.A.-based Premier Partnerships to "identify potential corporations" for the naming rights of the facility. McAfee last year elected not to renew its entitlement of the stadium, but Premier Partnerships COO Jeff Marks believes it "can fetch a sizable price tag." Marks estimated that the stadium "could net at least" $4M annually from naming rights, which would be split equally between the authority and the Raiders. Raiders Chief Exec Amy Trask said, "This is certainly a challenging business environment. It means we need to be more creative than we have been in the past" (S.F. BUSINESS TIMES, 5/29 issue).

WHO IS K.C.'S SUNSHINE BAND? Missouri Western State Univ. AD Dave Williams said that "about 18 contractors have picked up plans" for a Chiefs indoor training facility at the school. Bids for the facility are scheduled for later this month, with construction expected to begin July 1. However, the $25M in tax credits for the Chiefs -- $10M of which the team "pledged to donate for the practice building -- has been on hold because the state wants a 10-year commitment to keep the camp in Missouri" (AP, 6/1).

STAR BRIGHT: Cowboys Exec VP & COO Stephen Jones said that the team plans to add a hall of fame at their new stadium "in the next year or two," and eventually "build a hotel and stores in the area." Meanwhile, in Ft. Worth, Mitchell Schnurman wrote the new stadium is a "must-see attraction." It is both "awesome and intimate, depending on where you're standing," and it is "comfortably placed on the sprawling land -- atop a hill and at an angle to Rangers Ballpark" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 6/1).

LOSS OF YARDS: Green Bay/Brown County Professional Football Stadium District Exec Dir Pat Webb said that sales tax revenue used to pay off debt for the renovation of Lambeau Field was "more than $65,000 higher in March than in the same month" of '08, and the revenue is 7.3% below '08 revenue for the "first three months" (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 5/29).
