MLB Franchise Notes: Rangers Attendance Way Up From '08

Rangers Averaging 27,219 Fans Per Game,
Sixth Among AL Teams
The Rangers through 26 home games this season have attracted 705,366 fans to Rangers Ballpark, an average of 27,129 per game, which ranks 6th among the 14 AL teams. The club's attendance is up 82,194, or 11.7%, through the same number of games last season. Also, MLBAM data shows that May was the team's best online selling month in terms of individual tickets, up 33% from the previous best month, July '08 (Rangers). In San Antonio, Buck Harvey wrote Rangers fans "should celebrate" if club President Nolan Ryan and his business partners "buy a majority share of the team." Ryan would "ease the transition" in ownership, and "sentiment will be involved." However, Ryan "won't jump into this with his ego." He will "crunch the numbers" and "make the bottom-line, logical decision that smart CEOs make" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 5/31).

WE HAVE A PROBLEM: The Astros through 25 home games are averaging 29,970 fans per game at Minute Maid Park, down 4,601 fans per game from the same point in '08, and they are "on pace for their lowest attendance mark" since '97, when they played in the Astrodome. Through Monday, the team is 10-15 at home, but Astros President of Business Operations Pam Gardner said, "I think it's too early to say it's team performance" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/2).

UPS & DOWNS: In Detroit, Terry Foster notes Tigers ticket sales at Comerica Park are down "nearly 10,000 per game from this point last season" and season-ticket sales are "half of what they were a year ago." But the team is "seeing good game-day sales," and the Tigers rank 4th in the AL in attendance and 12th in MLB, both the "third-highest after 22 games since the team moved" to Comerica in '00 (DETROIT NEWS, 6/2).

MILWAUKEE'S BEST: The Brewers yesterday said that there was a "'virtual sellout' within 30 minutes" of $10 tickets for the June 9-11 series against the Rockies, part of a promotion that cut $1 off $28 Loge Outfield tickets for each of the Brewers' 18 wins in May. The Brewers said that "only scattered single seats" of the 6,000 for sale are still available (JSONLINE.com, 6/1).
