EPL Attendance Slightly Off From '07-08; Newcastle United Off 5%

The EPL averaged 35,594 fans per match during the '08-09 season, down 1.1% from 35,991 fans a year ago. Newcastle United, which was relegated at the end of the season and have been put up for sale by Owner Mike Ashley, finished third in the league in average attendance, but saw a 5% decline from last season. Sunderland saw the league's sharpest drop, off 7.3% from a year ago. Middlesbrough, which also was relegated for '09-10, saw a 6.4% jump at the gate, while Bolton led all teams with a 7.6% increase. For the '09-10 season, the English Football League Championship clubs Wolverhampton (24,153), Birmingham City (19,081) and Burnley (13,082) will be promoted to the EPL. The chart below lists attendance for all EPL clubs for the '08-09 season, with comparisons to last season (THE DAILY).
