AHL Americans Abandon Plans To Host Outdoor Game Due To Cost
The AHL Rochester Americans "have abandoned plans" to host an outdoor game after the team and the Triple-A Int'l League Rochester Red Wings "couldn't be assured that building a use-and-dispose rink at Frontier Field would be cost effective," according to Kevin Oklobzija of the ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE. Construction of a rink "on the infield of the downtown stadium would have cost at least $500,000." Americans President Lewis Staats: "It just didn't make financial sense." Staats said that the Americans and Red Wings "agreed to share profits or losses 50/50 in a game against" the AHL Hershey Bears." Staats: "We would have split it right down the middle and we'd run it together and share responsibility." Red Wings GM Dan Mason: "There are just so many ancillary costs. It could have been a great event but it could also have cost us all $200,000. Losing a ton of money wouldn't have been prudent." Oklobzija noted the "cons outweighed the pros," as there would "only have been around 15,000 to 18,000 possible seats at Frontier, and no revenue from network television." Meanwhile, the AHL Syracuse Crunch are "going full-throttle with plans to play the Binghamton Senators outdoors on Dec. 5 at Alliance Bank Stadium" in Syracuse. The Crunch "will partner with Onondaga County to pay for their game, assuming the county legislature gives approval." Crunch Senior VP Jim Sarosy said that the Crunch are "responsible for the cost of [the] rink itself," about $350,000 (ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE, 5/30).
