IRL Officials Discussing Cleveland's Potential Return To Series

IndyCar Could Return To Cleveland In '10
For Weekend Including Oval, Street Races |
Grand Prix of Cleveland officials and the IRL are involved in discussions about "what role the city will play" in a return to the IndyCar series schedule, according to Elton Alexander of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. The IRL "does want Cleveland back on the schedule, and when Cleveland returns, the event needs to be special." The '10 IndyCar Series schedule is expected to be announced in July, and if the race returns to Burke Lakefront Airport, it "could do so as an all-star event of open-wheel auto racing -- a unique event featuring an oval race and a street course race, all in the same weekend." The IRL "wants to put a one-mile flat oval, with no walls, inside the existing 2.47-mile Burke street course layout and have an oval race," and the series one day later "would hold the traditional 2.47-mile street course race." Included with those two races "could be other potential wrinkles, which would add up to an All-Star weekend of open-wheel racing." IRL VP/Development & Marketing John Lewis: "Conceptually, we think that would be a home run." But Alexander reports concerns include "adding pavement connecting the runways and taxiways at Burke for corners to bring an oval together." Another issue "would be finding a good date." The IndyCar schedule has an opening for Labor Day weekend, but that is "already a staple for the Cleveland Air Show." Also, the league "does not want to disrupt" the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, which is located about 85 miles from Cleveland and is traditionally held in late July or early August (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 5/29).
