Group Seeking To Build New Auto-Racing Complex In Denver Area

Proposed $200M Track Complex Would
Include Oval Speedway, Road Course
A group led by Schuck Corp. President & CEO Bill Schuck yesterday said that it "hopes to take advantage of a proposed state tourism tax incentive to build a massive auto-racing complex" in north Aurora, Colorado, according to Illescas & Chambers of the DENVER POST. The $200M track complex "on 1,500 acres of the TransPort property straddling Interstate 70 east of E-470, would include a 1-mile oval speedway, a 4-mile road course" and seat "between 65,000 and 100,000 fans." The group, "if all goes as planned," would break ground on the facility in late '10. Illescas & Chambers note the group has "no commitments from major racing series," nor does it have a "deal to bring NASCAR racing" to the proposed track. ISC officials for "more than two years" have said that they "would like to build a NASCAR track in the [Denver] metro area but that any sort of venture would require a public-private partnership." ISC Senior Dir of Corporate & Investor Communications Wes Harris yesterday said that the company "still views the metro area as a great location for a racetrack," but he added that he has "not had any discussions with the Schuck group about its plans" (DENVER POST, 5/28).

IN THE PITS: In Kentucky, Kevin Kelly notes a hearing in the appeal pursued by the former owners of Kentucky Speedway as part of their antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and ISC "likely will not occur until mid-June or later in the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals." The case was "not on the oral argument calendar posted Tuesday on the court's Web site for the first half of a two-week session starting June 8" (KENTUCKY ENQUIRER, 5/28).
