Helio Might Be IndyCar Series' Best Chance At Gaining Popularity

Texas Motor Speedway's Gossage Says
Castroneves Is Face Of IndyCar Series
Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, the IndyCar Series' "one true superstar" and one of the "most engaging personalities in the sports world, could help the open-wheel series get back to its glory days when people thought it, not NASCAR, was the top racing series" in the U.S., according to Anthony Andro of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. Switching to an "all Helio, all the time" promotional strategy could "help alleviate some of the issues" the racing circuit has faced in recent years. Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage: "He is the face of the series. Of all the years I've spent in racing, this is the guy whose personality just beams out of the car." Andro writes Castroneves has the "ability to dominate the sport on and off the track," as he "brings so much more to the sport." Andro: "It's not a knock on the defending champ Scott Dixon or points leader Dario Franchitti. It's also not a slight to Danica Patrick, but comparing her resume to Castroneves' isn't fair to either driver." However, fans "can't blame the IndyCar Series for promoting Patrick," as it "has to push who it thinks will garner attention for its sport" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 5/28).

GOING OFF COURSE? Castroneves appeared on ESPN's "PTI" yesterday, and ESPN's Tony Kornheiser asked him, "Do you have any thoughts about driving in NASCAR?" Castroneves: "You always have thoughts and if there is an opportunity, why not try? But maybe the opportunity might not be the right time. You've got to look at the opportunity. I see my other (open-wheel) colleagues … it is very difficult the way the rules play out when you jump into a series that's very different." He added, "If I were to go, one thing I would tell you: I would start from the bottom, and that's the way it should be done" ("PTI," ESPN, 5/27).

SEASON ON TRACK: In Milwaukee, Dave Kallmann notes as lucrative as Patrick's appearances in TV commercials, product endorsements and swimsuit layouts "may be for Danica the brand and as fun as they may be for Danica the person, those opportunities ultimately stem from Danica the race-car driver." Kallmann notes Patrick through the first four IndyCar races this season has "managed top-five finishes three times," including third in Sunday's Indy 500, and Patrick "likes the direction" the conversation is going regarding her racing career. Patrick also is "in the midst of decision-making regarding her future," and as a "sponsor's dream she has options both in the IndyCar Series and in NASCAR." Patrick said of making a decision about her future, "I have to make sure whatever I do is with a good team, and then after that you try and make sure everything possible is as good as it can be on the business side of things, because at the end of the day I'm a business and a brand and I have a job" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/28).
