MacFarlane Sells Ownership
Interest In MLS Club DC United |
MLS DC United co-Exec Chair Victor MacFarlane has sold his ownership interest in the franchise to his partner, co-Exec Chair Will Chang, who now assumes sole control of the team. MacFarlane and Chang purchased the rights to DC United in January ’07 from AEG. All other DC United management will remain in place (DC United). In DC, Steve Goff reports Chang now will have an estimated 98% controlling interest in the franchise -- the remaining 2% is held by former NBAers Christian Laettner and Brian Davis. Since purchasing United with Chang for an estimated $33M in '07, MacFarlane has “focused primarily on forming a partnership with a local jurisdiction to construct a medium-sized venue as part of a mixed-use development to replace” RFK Stadium. But potential deals in Prince George’s (MD) County and Poplar Point in DC “collapsed in the past nine months.” MacFarlane since purchasing the team has made “only periodical appearances at United games,” while Chang “has been seen regularly at home and away matches” (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 5/21). The WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL's Tierney Plumb notes Chang, who lives in S.F., also is MLB Giants Principal Partner and "is active" with the franchise (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/21).
