MLB Franchise Notes: Manny's Strategy For Apology Takes Shape

Sources Say Manny Will Not Detail
Events Leading To His Suspension
In L.A., Dylan Hernandez reports suspended Dodgers LF Manny Ramirez' "strategy for how he'll address the media appears to be taking shape." Sources said that Ramirez will "apologize for violating baseball's drug policy but won't detail the events that led to him being suspended for 50 games." The apology "probably would be enough for Dodgers owner Frank McCourt" (L.A. TIMES, 5/21).

WIN-WIN SITUATION: In Milwaukee, Don Walker noted the Brewers earlier this month "unwrapped a promotion called 'Brewers Win, You Win.'" Under the plan, "every time the Brewers won a game, a $1 would be knocked off a Loge Outfield ticket for any game" of the June 9-11 series against the Rockies. A Loge Outfield ticket usually costs $28. Since the promo was announced, the Brewers have won 13 games, meaning tickets are currently "going for $15" (JSONLINE.com, 5/20).

DOWN BY THE BAY: In California, Gary Peterson noted A's attendance is "dreadful," as the team is averaging 18,030 through 18 home games at the 34,077-seat McAfee Coliseum, down 12% from last year's average. Peterson wrote the figures are "about what you'd expect from a team whose" owner, Lew Wolff, "bad-mouthed Oakland and the Coliseum before the season after canceling his stadium plans in Fremont and pinning his hopes on a San Jose project so highly conceptual it barely qualifies as a pipe dream" (CONTRA COSTA TIMES, 5/20).

ON THE UPSWING: In K.C., Sam Mellinger reported the Royals are averaging 21,567 fans through 21 home games at the 38,177-seat Kauffman Stadium, a 16% "increase at a time when attendance throughout baseball is down about 5[%]." A "better team and $250[M] of renovations to Kauffman Stadium are the driving factors." However, Royals season-ticket sales are "down from 9,200 to 8,500" (K.C. STAR, 5/19).
