Notre Dame In Early Talks To Play Football At Yankee Stadium

Notre Dame AD Says He Has
Been In Touch With Yankees
Univ. of Notre Dame (ND) AD John Swarbrick said that the Yankees are "open to having college football" at the new Yankee Stadium, and Swarbrick "would like the Fighting Irish to be the first team to play there," according to Pete Thamel of the N.Y. TIMES. Swarbrick stressed that "no dates had been discussed." Swarbrick: "We’ve been in contact with Yankee Stadium and asked and inquired. We will be discussing games with them, but we haven’t entered into any substantive discussions.” He added that the "rich history of Notre Dame and Army playing" at the old Yankee Stadium would make Army a "preferred opponent." Swarbrick: "It would be of great historical significance for us if it would be Army." Pointing out that Notre Dame's victory over Army at Yankee Stadium in 1913 is "considered the most important game" in ND football history, Swarbrick said that he is "trying to plan significant anniversary games and would love to have the 100th anniversary of that game played" at the ballpark. But Swarbrick conceded that the Yankees "may want college football at the Stadium before 2013, and if that is the case, he would like the Irish to be part of the debut" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/21).

TIME TO ENLIST: In Baltimore, Jeff Barker cites sources as saying that M&T Bank Stadium is "expected to host at least one Army-Navy football game -- and perhaps more -- as the schools seek sites for future games." The sources said that an announcement on future locations of the Army-Navy game after '09 could be made "by the end of the week." M&T Bank Stadium is among four finalists for games from '10-14, along with FedEx Field, the new Meadowlands stadium and Lincoln Financial Field, the site of this year's game. Navy AD Chet Gladchuk yesterday said that the panel making the decision "will probably name hosts for more than those five games -- and that more than one city will be named" (Baltimore SUN, 5/21).
