WWE Moves Event To Staples Center After Denver NBA Conflict

McMahon, WWE Find Home For
"Raw" At Staples Center
The WWE has moved the May 25 edition of "Monday Night Raw" from Denver's Pepsi Center to Staples Center in L.A. due to the scheduling conflict with Nuggets-Lakers Western Conference Final Game Four. WWE will hold consecutive nights of action at Staples Center with a second event on May 26. Tickets to both shows went on sale last night at 8:00pm PT. WWE will return to Denver on August 7 for a live event at the Denver Coliseum. Refunds for the May 25 Pepsi Center show can be obtained by returning tickets to the place of purchase (WWE). WWE VP/PR & Corporate Communications Robert Zimmerman said that "no agreement has been reached" between WWE and Pepsi Center Owner Kroenke Sports Enterprises (KSE) over the conflict, and that "'all options are on the table' to address a possible breach-of-contract case." But KSE Exec VP Paul Andrews said that "'both sides agreed in principle' that the WWE event would be moved up a day early in Denver to Sunday." Andrews said WWE Chair Vince McMahon "asked us for five tickets to the Nuggets game Monday so he could come and enjoy the game." Andrews: "That to me sounds like a guy who was ready to make a deal. That's why [the Staples Center move] was a little shocking" (L.A. TIMES, 5/21).

LOOKING FOR A TAPOUT: McMahon said of KSE, "They bumped us right out of the building, hardly an apology. They didn't do anything for us at all, and the media was talking about someone has to write a check. They didn't want to write anything and they wanted to give us a Sunday night. And the name of the show is Monday Night Raw" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 5/21). More McMahon: "We have attempted to enforce the contract and Kroenke's organization has said, 'Absolutely not. You are not going to play here on Monday night. We’re going to have a basketball game.’ They just threw us out on our ear. You won't believe the way that our organization was treated" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 5/20). CNBC.com's Darren Rovell wrote, "Many have confused the issue by showing how much publicity Vince McMahon and his cronies have milked this snag for. ... But that doesn't take away the fact that [KSE] and the Pepsi Center are in the wrong here" (CNBC.com, 5/20).

PAYBACK TIME? McMahon said that he will "have some fun with the show" at Staples Center, and that there will be a "confrontation between himself and an actor posing" as KSE Owner Stan Kroenke (DENVER POST, 5/21). In Orlando, Brian Fritz wrote, "Why do I have a feeling that we will see lots of WWE talent wearing Laker jerseys that night? Or maybe we'll see Vince himself holding up a Kobe Bryant jersey again" (ORLANDOSENTINEL.com, 5/20).

QUICK THINKING: In Cleveland, Brian Windhorst reports Quicken Loans Arena has taken measures to "avoid any potential issue" by moving a Yanni concert scheduled for the arena on June 3 to the Wolstein Center. The NBA Finals begins June 4 and the Cavaliers would host Game One that day if they reach the Finals (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 5/21).
