Tournaments Make Adjustments With Mickelson Out Indefinitely

Mickelson Suspends PGA Tour Schedule
After Wife Diagnosed With Breast Cancer
The next two PGA Tour events -- this week's HP Byron Nelson Championship and next week's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial -- are altering their marketing around Phi Mickelson after he "suspended his PGA Tour schedule indefinitely" following his wife, Amy, being diagnosed yesterday with breast cancer, according to Jimmy Burch of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. The Crowne Plaza had "crafted most of its 2009 marketing efforts" around Mickelson, including billboards and banners near the course, and his absence means the event "will not feature a defending champion for the first time since" '72. Crowne Plaza Tournament Dir Peter Ripa said that Mickelson's image yesterday was "removed from digital billboards" and that he was "attempting to alter two television spots scheduled to run this weekend in which Mickelson urged fans to watch him defend his title." He added that "all of the permanent Mickelson-related signage, including the banners near the course, will remain in place." But Ripa "expressed support for Mickelson's decision and called the news 'sobering'" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 5/21).

U.S. OPEN IN DOUBT: In N.Y., Hank Gola notes Mickelson "has to be considered a long shot at best" to play in the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black Golf Course from June 18-21 (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/21). In S.F., Ron Kroichick writes while it is "natural to wonder if Mickelson will play" in the Open, "it's also far less important in light" of yesterday's news (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/21).
